Achilles Bursitis
Achilles bursitis or retrocalcaneal bursitis is common in runners and is a pain in the back of the heel. The retrocalcaneal bursa, a small sack of fluid between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone, can become inflamed, causing pain, especially when running uphill or on soft surfaces. Achilles bursitis is often accompanied by tenderness and swelling. When pushing the sides of the heel with fingers, a spongy resistance may be felt.
Rest and cold therapy or ice helps to alleviate the inflammation along with anti-inflammatory medication. Stretching the lower leg and Achilles tendon before and after exercise may help prevent Achilles bursitis.
